In the ruins of an abandoned old house is a bed. Not an ordinary bed, but a bed that is alive, and hungry. When people find their way to the house and lie for too long on the bed, they are sucked into it and digested, as the trapped soul of an artist mocks and taunts it. But then a woman finds herself at the house who the artist suspects might be the key to ending the nightmare. Whatever you do, don’t lie on the bed!

Inspired by a nightmare, Death Bed conjures up feast of surreal folk horror and depicts the spirit of Aubrey Beardsley (the “artist”) condemned to spiritual prison behind a painting where he must witness the bed devouring its victims. Shot in Detroit on a budget of $30,000, its look and narrative owe much to both horror/exploitation cinema and underground cinema. It’s a weird and unique experience, unavailable in the UK since the Portland video cassette release in 1983.
