We’re delighted to be promoting Momus’ second ever Manchester show – and first visit in four years!
For nearly thirty years he has been releasing, to marginal commercial and critical success, albums on labels in the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. In his lyrics and his other writing he makes seemingly random use of decontextualised pieces of continental (mostly French) philosophy, and has built up a personal world he says is ‘dominated by values like diversity, orientalism, and a respect for otherness’. He is fascinated by identity, Japan, Rome, the avant-garde, time travel and sex.
During the rainy season in Osaka, Momus began recording his 2015 LP, Glyptothek. This time the procedure was to start with samples from his extensive collection of Japanese folk 45s, making new songs with old sounds.
‘Momus is the perfect rock star for the 21st century’ – Pitchfork
‘The David Bowie of the art-pop underground’ – The Guardian
‘One of the most provocative, intelligent songwriters around; someone who’ll tackle sexuality, (im)morality, and the sins of the world with almost embarrassing sincerity’ – NME
