The Pumaman
Italy 1980
English language
Director: Alberto DeMartino
Cast: Walter George Alton, Donald Pleasance, Miguel Angel Fuentes
As the ancient Aztec legend goes, at the dawn of time, a spaceship landed at Stonehenge and delivered the first Pumaman who to Earth. As the custodian of a powerful gold mask, he will protect humanity for generations.
Fast-forward to 1980’s London. Following a serious accident in which he strangely remains unharmed, Professor Tony Farms (Alton) discovers that he is in fact Pumaman (”Poo-maa-man”), a superhero who is descended from the gods. Together with an Aztec priest, they try to thwart the plans of Kobras (Pleasance), who is in possession of the sacred golden mask, and plans to hypnotise government leaders with it and take over the world.
Set in London, it comes complete with tourist-trap locations and cheeky cockney cab drivers.
Now, we have shown some real stinkers here at Certificate X, and Pumaman is way up there on the Stink-O-Meter. Donald Pleasance once stated this as the worst film he has ever been in (and that’s saying something!). From the cheesy theme tune to the un-special special effects, it’s pure trash.
But, we have said it before and we’ll say it again, trash is our treasure.
You have been warned!
Screened from an old ex-rental VHS cassette, the feature will, as usual, be supported by a short presentation of suitable trailers.
